There will be people who will want to know this first drawback ahead of time and it may well disqualify the PL-89 from inclusion in some repertoires. I have a fairly decent home theater receiver, so I think this is a pretty fair assessment based solely on the PL-89s themselves. For towers this size, most people are going to be a bit underwhelmed and even disappointed by the lack of bass output and especially mid bass punch. These speakers are NOT "full range." If you want truly full-range floor standing speakers, in most cases you are going to have to find something with a 15" woofer. In my review of the Bic America FT-6T 400-Watt 6.5" 2-Way Tower Speaker, I stated that truly full-range speakers that can stand alone in the absence of a subwoofer are probably a thing of the past, especially for... I've had them hooked up for about a month. I was not impressed with the bass at all for the first two weeks. The bass became more pronounced as they broke in. A a couple times my subwoofer was turned off and I did not realize it was unplugged because these speakers were putting out so much bass(the housekeepers unplugged the sub surge protector). I now turn off the subwoofer when I'm playing music as there is absolutely no reason to have it on. In music, the bass has the proper extension. In movies, you still need the sub to get that bass extension for explosions but these speakers do sound quite impressive without one. Even though the PL-28 center has 8" woofers, it does not produce even close to the amount of bass these towers produce. I watched the new Star Trek to hear the beginning sequence through the horn tweeters. It sounded... I cannot believe the price point these are being sold at.(And I got them even cheaper due to someones strained financial circumstances) I haven't put these through all of the paces yet, but the clarity and sound is amazing. I am using FLAAC files at the moment and these tear up any music style you throw at them. The most amazing thing is the sounds you never heard before in a recording, its like listening to songs again for the first time. I was using a pair of Cerwin-Vega RE30s(retro) previous to this. Although the CVs have a good sound, they simply lack the clarity and accent of the PL-89s. Heres a breakdown: Build Quality: Very STURDY. Even the covers they came with are sturdy and well made. Much higher quality than my sony ssf-6000s, and even the re30s. The banana posts are of high quality as well. They are of significant weight, and I... Read more |
